Hefring AS
Developer & distributor of water velocity instruments
Eastern Norway

Nortek AS is a marine instrumentation company that develops and distributes water velocity instruments. Its products are based on the acoustic Doppler principle and span from single point turbulence sensors to long range current profilers. Customers are scientists, research institutions and consulting engineers, all with demanding applications that require state-of-the-art instrumentation that is reliable and easy-to-use.

The company strives to conceive new ideas that permits the measurement of new combinations of parameters, cut costs or simply makes the measurements easier to conduct. In the most common applications, the end user places one or more instruments in a frame deployed on the bottom of the sea for a period of 1 to 12 months while the battery powered instrument collects and stores all the data. The systems are then retrieved and the data processed in software before the data is subjected to individual scientific treatment or statistical processing. The instruments can only be implemented with a combination of low-power/low-noise electronics, acoustic transducers and underwater mechanics, so a broad group of engineering skills is required to design and produce successful products.

In this underwater study of the flow close the ocean bottom, biologists use three Nortek high-resolution instruments to look at the turbulent flow and its possible impact on marine organisms.

Renewable Energy
The focus over the last years has been on innovative schemes for measuring ocean waves in combination with ocean currents (US patent issued). This has given the company a unique position in the field of marine renewable energy, whether it is for tidal turbines (direct measurement of the incoming currents), wave energy production (measurement of wave height and direction) or offshore wind turbines (estimating structural load).

The main Nortek office and the company production facility is located 15 kilometres south of Oslo. The privately held company has subsidiaries in the UK, China, France, USA, Canada and the Netherlands and almost half the employees are found outside Norway. Shipment logs show more than 1,000 instruments shipped per year to more than 75 countries around the world.
